5 Reasons Why Hockey is Great for Youth

November 10, 2021

Hockey season is in full swing, so it’s a perfect time to talk a little bit about some of the reasons hockey is the BEST sport for your kids to get involved with.

As a member of a hockey family, I may be a little bit biased. My children are all involved in youth hockey leagues, and I’ve even had the wonderful opportunity to coach! But, as far as youth sports go, there are some great benefits to hockey that you may not have considered. So, let’s get into it!

Hockey is FUN!

Now, whether you’ve been a hockey player yourself or have simply watched from behind the glass, it is easy to see how much fun everyone on the ice is having. One of the best ways to keep your kids engaged in sports is by making sure they’re enjoying themselves, and what’s more fun than flying across the ice with your friends? And my wife and I can attest to the fact that it’s pretty fun being bystanders, too!

Hockey Encourages Teamwork

Lots of other kids’ sports have a heavy focus on individual development and can quickly lead to a few star players getting all of the play-time. One of the most valuable lessons in hockey is the importance of uplifting and supporting your team. Kids are encouraged to work together and grow as a team, not just as individuals.

Hockey Builds Resilience

“Fall seven times, get up eight.”

Nothing teaches persistence quite the same way hockey does. Whether it’s in the heat of a game or in the learning stages of learning basic skate skills, hockey is a sport that will knock you down a few thousand times, but there is always someone there to help you back up.

Learning to roll with the punches and keep your head in the game is a lesson that helps kids not only while on the ice – but far and beyond in life.

Hockey Improves Agility

The physical and mental benefits of playing hockey are hard to miss. Playing hockey can help develop and improve hand-eye coordination, balance, spatial awareness, and many other mental and physical skills.

It’s a sport that helps work out both your body and your brain, setting your kids up for positive mental and physical health down the line.

Hockey Sets Up Healthy Habits

Playing hockey as a kid can set your children up to be even more active adults. Whether they stick with hockey as they get older or move on to other activities, your kids will have the skills, abilities, and endurance to maintain active and healthy lives long after their youth hockey days.

So, if you weren’t already a hockey family before this, here’s to starting your journey! And you might just see us in the stands cheering our kids.
