Giving the Gift of Time: How to Volunteer Around Mankato

May 8th, 2024 by

One of the best parts of my job is helping others. I really enjoy getting to know a client and their business or family, and finding out their specific needs, hopes, dreams, and goals. I also enjoy being able to help my community – and not just in terms of insurance.

How do you give back? Volunteer work can be very rewarding and fulfilling, not to mention it assists countless people across the region. Studies even show that your overall health can improve by volunteering, including a better mental health outlook.

There are plenty of ways to give back; even for those of us who have very busy schedules. Here are a variety of ways you can donate your time and talents in Southern Minnesota.

Give the Gift of Food

According to Feeding America, one in 11 Minnesota children faces hunger. Here are some places to donate food, funds, or time:

Please review each location’s individual policies online (linked above) about donations or specific needs, before dropping off donations.

Help a Four-Legged Friend

Do you enjoy spending time with animals? There are options right here in and around Mankato for that, too! Check out opportunities at these great organizations:

You can do things like walk dogs, clean cages, donate items needed (blankets, food, and supplies), and more. There are lots of ways you can volunteer for our community’s animal-focused nonprofits!

Work With Area Youth

If you’d like to give your time to the youth of Minnesota, there are plenty of local organizations that offer mentorship programs, sports coaching, or assistance for children of all ages. Check out some of these local organizations that are seeking a helping hand with our younger Minnesotans.

Care for Our Environment

There are ways to give your time, money, or efforts simply for nature, too! Try these options out:

  • Adopt-a-Creek
  • Adopt-a-Park
  • Adopt-a-Flower Bed
  • Adopt-a-Planter

All nature-based “adoptions” are operated through the City of Mankato. Find out more about the programs online here or call 507-387-8600.

Plenty of Volunteering Options

There is an endless list of needs in our area. Personally, I enjoy giving my time to youth hockey in St. Peter. I also enjoy my work as a member of the Greater Mankato Growth, which always offers a number of opportunities to lend a helping hand

Community Charities of Minnesota connects organizations with fundraising opportunities, including everything from golf outings to hunts. Habitat for Humanity Mankato brings together volunteers year-round with both its “ReStore” and planned builds. The organization offers a robust calendar on its website. Finally, Vine, Faith in Action helps area seniors with everything from Bingo Nights to Meals on Wheels.

The opportunities are plenty, and the need is strong. How will you give back to our community?
